John Forrest Collection New Vintages

New Zealand has an enviable international reputation for single varietal white wines, but to date, few winemakers have explored white blends. In my winemakeing experience, I have found the whole is often greater than the sum of parts and The White, is my expresion of this belief. To achieve this, I have chosen from my vineyards only those varieties which have won acclaim in that region. From the warm, stony Gimblett Gravels in Hawke’s bay - Viognier; from the limestone soils of North Otago - Pinot Gris and from Marlborough’s patchwork of riverbed soils - Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc and Gewurztraminer. The final blen will vary year to year and indeed may exclude some varietals, depending on my judgment as to the contribution each part makes to the whole.
A unique multi varietal white blend crafted from Dr John’s premier terroir(s) throughout New Zealand. It defines what the world of wine so admires from New Zealand – aromatic intensity, fruit concentration, textural complexity and that, all important, defining acidity. A subtle nose of citrus, stonefruits and aromatic herbs, that evolves in the glass. It is a complex textural wine with exceptional palate weight , that backbone of acidity, underlying drying minerality and yet it remains poised and balanced. A beguiling multi-faceted wine, matching with many cuisines, it evolves slowly in the bottle and rewards cellaring.
This is an aromatic and blended white wine that is traditionally vinified from multiple varieties from as many regions - Chardonnay, Riesling Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin Blanc and Gewurztraminer. This example had an initial herbal quality that quickly changed into baked apple then citrus fruits; a medium+ (ish) weighted wine on the palate with a gentle creamy texture embellished by a variety of fruit flavors, textures and impressions; Dry with a gentle savory edge; high acidity and lovely medium+ finish. Coming back to this wine several minutes later there was a dramatic increase in complexity, fruit and flavor suggestions as well as texture - all positive. Great balance and charm.

Marlborough has an ideal climate for late harvested dessert wines; thanks to cool nights and temperate days, modest autumn rainfall and a harvest period lasting into June.
These elements allow the berries an extended time on the vine, concentrating the sugars and flavours while retaining acidity. I have been making sweet rieslings since 1993 from three vineyards located within the Wairau Valley. Two are on geologically young, stoney, free-draining gravels close to the river; producing intense citrus aromas and pristine crisp acidity. The third, within the Brancott Valley, lies on geologically older soils, crushed stones with a portion of clay which gives the fruit flavours of stone fruit and Asian spice, softer acidity and tremendous mouth texture.
The last great vintage of this wine was made 7 years ago and to help celebrate we decided it was worth releasing in a 750ml bottle. 100% botrytised grapes were handpicked to make a wine with deep golden colour, intensely perfumed with aromas of marzipan, sweet apricots and candied orange peel. The wine is very sweet in the mouth with powerful flavours of ripe melons, dried apricots and marmalade, unfolding into toffee and toasty oatmeal. Excellent balance with pH, acid and sugar, rich and complex the wine has a long persistent finish.
